Helsinki’s OG cave dwellers Finntroll return with first new album in 7 years Vredesvävd.

Re-emerging from the forest after 7 long winters, Finnish folk metal legends Finntroll produce a resurgent new album filled with all the dark and creepy tunes which would fit perfectly into a fun fair run by Hell’s finest demons.

Finntroll have always produced their brand of folk metal different from the masses (using the term masses quite liberally in the context of folk metal), and this album is no different. Taking the traditional folk metal patterns and instruments, but with a much darker tone and with their trademark raspy vocals comes 38 minutes of a genuinely solid album.

Sometimes being out the game for a while can lead to massive disappointment (Chinese Democracy anyone?). Thankfully not the case here. There are no songs that feel like a weak link, the whole album gels together extremely well and makes it very easy to listen to straight through.

Ormfolk and Mask are the obvious standout songs. However, Forsen is the standout track for me. Straight out of an evil carnival, with a delightfully creepy interlude.

If you like your polka served straight out of a nightmare, then this album is for you! Whether you are an established fan of Finntroll or not, you will not be disappointed with this album. To be honest every time I listen to it I get a new favourite song, which attests to the quality of the album.

I had not really intended on reviewing albums when I first had inspiration to write a blog on metal. But I very much enjoyed discussing this album so might give some more a go. Let me know your thoughts below.
