Being from the UK, it’s always exciting when a new hotly tipped UK metal band unleashed their debut offering. As Everything Unfolds are one of those aforementioned highly anticipated bands. Sitting somewhere on that modern blurry line between post-hardcore and metalcore, with the melodic choruses intertwined with screaming downtuned chuggy passages. Let’s see if this six-piece’s debut album Within Each Lies the Other can live up to the hype.

As Everything Unfolds started life with a 5 track EP Closure back in 2018. With hundred of thousands of YouTube views and approaching 200k Spotify followers before they have even untethered their first full length release shows you the traction they have gathered. They waste absolutely no time showing you what they are all about right from the first track On the Inside. Bouncy rhythms with electronic backing very much in the modern melodic metal (post-nu-metal?) vein and a catchy singalong chorus. Vocalist Charlie Rolfe passes between Paramore‘s Hayley Williams and Kittie‘s Morgan Lander at will.

I’m Not the Only One slips into the Ice Nine Kills variant of melodic deathcore. Not even halfway through the album and I am impressed with the twists and turns taken through the labyrinth of musical genres. It’s still rooted in that slamming post-hardcore sound, but the sprinkles of variation keep the ears stimulated. Rhythmically there is a heavy sense of nu-metal in the heavier passages throughout the album. Now that nu-metal is no longer a dirty word I can say that without dodging piss-filled bottles.

Not afraid to put the storming anger to one side and reflect on the softer side, One Last Time and Wither form themselves into your classic brand of metalcore power ballad to close out the album. I am a huge believer that the opening and closing tracks on an album are the most important. They are the defining factor in listening to an album straight through, or just grabbing the best couple of tracks, sticking them on a playlist and forgetting about the album. In the age of music streaming this is all to easy to do. Thankfully Within Each Lies the Other doesn’t dissapoint.

The UK metal scene has hit a bit of a peak at the moment, with Architects new album hitting number one on it’s release a couple of weeks ago. The arena filling nature of Within Each Lies the Other makes it easy to see As Everything Unfolds burrowing their way into the minds of the masses. Full of intrigue, heart and thoughtful songwriting. It’s highly encouraging to see new bands still popping up to keep the UK heavy music scene slaying.
