Creatures of the Dark Realm

Sometimes you know exactly what you are going to get. Whether that be the UK’s final Eurovision score, or violent toilet episodes following a delicious Taco Bell. Bloodbound are one such band in which the conclusion can be formed ahead of time. Gloriously over the top fantasy power metal. More cheese than an army of mice could devour. Returning with their latest album Creatures of the Dark Realm, I could likely write the review before listening to the album. But alas that would be ridiculous, and boy I love me some coagulated milk produce.

The mention of Eurovision is fitting. Bloodbound fall into the category of Europop infused heavy metal – a particular sub-genre of power metal. You really either love it or you don’t. For some the deliriously upbeat and uptempo melody is going to have you vomiting quicker than watching an episode of Real Housewives of Who Gives A Toss. However, should you be able to handle the pomp and circumstance, then there is an intense wave of glory to behold. For this writer, epically over the top fantasy power metal is a not-so guilty pleasure.

Creatures of the Dark Realm wastes no time, opening with a short build up track before diving straight into the title track. When Fate is Calling embraces the fist raising pop melodies with all the subtlety of a child writing a Christmas list. Eyes Come Alive ventures into the darker realm, with a track closer to resembling a classic power metal track – even a little industrial at times. An excellent change of pace at the centre of the album.

Gathering of Souls builds up to the most pop heavy chorus on the album. You can picture the crushingly derivative girl band dancing which could easily accompany it. It in no way feels out of place though, such is the beauty of fantasy power metal. March into War ventures extremely close into modern Sabaton territory. The slower pumping fists in the air heavy metal anthem is a second change of pace on the album.

I started this review by saying I could write this without even listening to the album. I could have done, and it would have been 99% accurate. Creatures of the Dark Realm is 45 minutes of no nonsense, totally extravagant pop infused fantasy power metal. There is nothing really that hasn’t been done many times over within this genre. However, don’t let that sway you into thinking this is a bad or boring album. Quite the contrary. Not everything has to be groundbreaking. Bloodbound know what they’re doing, and they have put together another top effort here.
