Baest band

In a week we learn that Download Festival has been postponed once again, we still wait with bated breath that the return of live music will come soon! However, the continuing release of new music during a global pandemic has been remarkable. Conversely though, this week has had rather slim pickings on the headliner band front. We still have plenty to explore through, from Wolfheart to Chevelle and Darkest Hour.

Gloomy post-grunge/nu-metal outfit Chevelle continue to show off their NIRATIAS (Nothing Is Real And This Is A Simulation) album with the release of Mars Simula. Now onto their ninth studio album, having consistently released remarkable consistent albums over their 3 decade career. Staying constantly somewhere on the periphery of nu-metal is likely the key to their longevity.

Progressive power metal wizards Immortal Guardian unleashed another track from their critically acclaimed Psychosomatic album. Complete with music video, Phobia explores the effect the global pandemic has had on our psyche. The catchy ‘suck in your head all day’ chorus shows it is not just mind-blowing technical proficiency and spellbinding arrangement that Immortal Guardian can excel at.

Switzerland’s Dreamshade teamed up with vocalist John Henry from melodic metalcore band Darkest Hour for Nothing But The Truth. I have been hugely impressed with the latest offerings from Dreamshade, having missed their earlier work. The genre-melding arrangement is terrific, with nay a dull moment in sight.

More melody, in the form of melodic death metal this time with Hereditary from Wolfheart. Coming from recent EP release Skull Soldiers, if you like your melodeath full of old school Amon Amarth intensity, then this is a track to get windmilling to. Hair windmilling, not with any other appendage – unless that’s your thing (just keep it behind closed doors).

Post-hardcore crew As Everything Unfolds continue building up to their debut album Within Each Lies The Other with new single On The Inside. They have a terrific following for a band yet to release their debut album, so things surely look bright for the Brits. The bouncy track, filled with a plethora of ambient effects and an aggressive vocalist is destined for larger venues.

With the release of the excellent new album Necro Sapiens from Denmark’s Baest comes Towers of Suffocation. Full of all the classic death metal intensity and groove you could shake a rotting corpse at. Oh and the the mandatory “bleugh”s for good measure. Traditional death metal has been weaving its way back with vigour recently. The more the better!

If you prefer a more modern slab of death metal, Drown in Sulphur stay forth with brutal deathcore on latest track Vivant Tenebrae. Filthy downturning and dissonant chugging to have your parents (or children) wondering WTF is going on. But what do they know anyway.

It’s difficult for me to look past Baest as they have released a brilliant album this week. But I am going to give this weeks metal track of the week honour to Wolfheart with the excellent Hereditary. The pull of pummelling Swedish death metal is too hard to me to resist. Pull out your drinking horns and raise a toast to Valhalla!
