Another week of lockdown, another step towards finally losing the last remnants of my sanity. Maybe I’m due my black metal phase. Either way, some interesting and varying releases this past week from Architects, Butcher Babies and Of Mice & Men just to name a few. Some new bands for me too which is always exciting.
We got another release from Architects off upcoming album For Those That Wish To Exist which is out next week. Meteor is undeniably Architects, however after the excellent opening double of Animals and Black Lungs, this is a little flat. It’s all relative though. Still looking forward to the album mind.
Of Mice & Men gave us another glimpse of their new record with Timeless. There’s a bit more of a crabcore feel here, with the odd timing and dissonant chugging. Maybe showing OG crabcore crew Attack Attack! how to do it after their disappointing recent release?
After signing a record deal with Nuclear Blast, and with third album Initiation out May 7th, Canadian punk/metal/not sure band Sumo Cyco release new single Bystander. I’ve personally never got into Sumo Cyco, I think they’re one of the those band you have to ‘get’ to appreciate. But they appear to succeed at what they do.
Bro’ metal band Butcher Babies released Yorktown, another track off their forthcoming album. It appears they are hitting a popularity boost for their upcoming release. I find these type of bands extremely hit and miss. For every Godsmack there is a Five Finger Death Punch. Can’t say I have been hugely sold on Butcher Babies in the past, but will definitely give the new release a fair shot.
Finnish melodic death metal band Bloodred Hourglass released Drag Me the Rain. Their fifth album is on its way, but this is the first time I have come across the Norsemen. Needless to say I shall be checking them out more on the back of this excellent release.
We got some Eurodance inspired symphonic metal from Sirenia. Voyage Voyage was released to coincide with new album Riddles, Ruins and Revelations. Another new band for me, but a worthy check out for the Nordic goths.
If you like your folk metal sounding like it’s straight out of The Witcher, new single Barren King from Manntra gives you the spooky medieval shot you’re craving. If you’re out for some new Emmure inspired metalcore, check out Italy’s Outmayr new release Golden Scars from their upcoming debut album.
But for me, I’m a sucker for melodic death metal. I’m going to have to give this weeks honour to Bloodred Hourglass. A close second for Sirenia, but you can’t deny the siren level pull of good ol’ melodeath.
Check out last weeks metal tracks of the week.
