Serj Tankian announces a new EP of songs he wrote for System of a Down’s unreleased 6th album
System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian announced on Instagram that he is releasing a new EP called Elasticity. A teaser from the first track was included, with full premiere this Thursday (4th Feb).
This will be filled with songs that he wrote for SOAD which never came to fruition, as they could never align their creative minds to put together a follow up album to 2005’s Hypnotize.
In May 2006, SOAD went into hiatus, reuniting in 2010 for a series of European festival dates in 2011. They have since performed a number of festival headlining slots worldwide. But has not as a group released any new music until 2020.
Then in 2020, SOAD stunned us by surprise releasing 2 brand new tracks. Protect the Land and Genocidal Humanoidz were released as a collective effort by the band to raise awareness of atrocities being carried out in their ancestral homeland of Armenia. The collective support towards their homeland spawned this release. Whilst their US political opinions are widely known to contradict, plaguing a 6th SOAD album.
Then this week, we have had the aforementioned announcement of Serj Tankian‘s EP release. We have also had a music video release for Genocidal Humanoidz, along with a fundraising campiagn for their collective cause.
We already know that guitarist Daron Malakian included songs he wrote for System of a Down on the second release of his side project Scars on Broadway (now called Daron Malakian and Scars on Broadway). 2018’s Dictator is not as good as their self titled debut. Although still a good album, I would have been a bit disappointed if System‘s name was on the front cover instead.
I had always been extremely nervous of SOAD releasing a new album. Their 5 album stretch is absolute perfection. Rarely a song that isn’t amazing. Completely insane, imaginative, and heavy AF. There is always a very high risk of a 6th album that isn’t to that same standard tarnishing this outstanding legacy.
So what do you think, should members of SOAD continue in this pattern? Side projects and maybe the odd official SOAD track or 2. Or should we just get a new full System of a Down album and take a chance on it’s level of greatness?
I for one am more than happy with the material we have already. I will saviour it as a collective masterpiece. But Protect the Land and Genocidal Humanoidz are both very high quality tracks. So you never know…
