Finnish modern melodic death metal band Dimman are set to release their debut album Songs and Tales of Grievance on July 30th, 2021 via Inverse Records. The first single from that album Paroxysm has been released, and it’s an interesting take on some more typical metal styles.
Normally when you get the clean female/ dirty male vocal combo, it’s in the Amaranthe pop-metal or Epica symphonic metal scene. The first 15 seconds suggest a gothic EDM style pop-metal track is forthcoming, when it then explodes into life, and interjects a strong sense of melody, leaning more to the symphonic metal side. However, not content with keeping it simple, a minute in to Paroxysm the industrial riffs and growled vocals break out to turn the aggression up and the track really breaks through.
I was sceptical with the modern melodeath label, but it’s probably an apt description, and works very well whilst it’s at it. I am always a fan of something new being brought to an often stale metal scene (in spite of what purists might preach), and I’m excited to see what Dimman can produce on a full length release.
Guitarist Jaakko Yli-Sorvari commented:
“Paroxysm showcases all the elements Dimman is made of. Beautiful melodies, heavy riffing and technical musicianship are all married together forming a catchy soundscape. Paroxysm tells the story of human arrogance and the clouding of one’s judgement.”
The album addresses all the grievances and insecurities that cause misery to both individuals and communities. The incapability to be able to affect the injustices results in frustration, which can be heard from every song on the album.
Songs and Tales of Grievance is mixed and mastered by Santeri Peltomäki (Entropy Mixing) whose powerful production supports the band’s versatile compositions.
