Fresh from a name change, Germany’s Electric Callboy have graced our ever waiting aural crevices with their latest single Spaceman. Following the departure of former singer Sebastian “Sushi” Biesler (now GHOSTKID), Electric Callboy 2.0 was presented to the world in 2020 graced by new joint vocalist Nico Sallach and a committed adherence to a carefree attitude. Electric Callboy have fleeted back and forth with the frivolities throughout their tenure, but have now nailed their modern formula on their latest releases.
Sticking to a formula is often fraught with peril. Play it too safe, and you are stuck with stale, derivative mush that fades into the background of the masses. How often do you hear a new metal track that sounds like 1000 other current songs (progressive metalcore I’m looking at you…). However, nail the formula whilst keeping things just fresh enough is a one way ticket to mass exposure and legions of fans. Glory or ruin…a dangerous game for one to play.
Since the release of 2020’s MMXX EP and the megahit single Hypa Hypa, Electric Callboy have chosen the formulaic path. Through the following releases of We Got The Moves, Pump It and now Spaceman, it’s clear they are following a particular pattern that has shot them to international stardom. Early Electric Callboy was fully rooted in early 2000s deathcore, with significantly less silliness scattered about, and since then have swung the dial from serious to carefree intermittently.
Since 2020’s MMXX however, each song has a distinct split personality, using the clean vocals of Nico for a dance build up intro and soaring chorus, with Kevin‘s scathing dirty vocals and some good old Drop C metalcore chugging verses. Oh and the obligatory groovy breakdown. So far this could be a whole splattering of turn of the century metalcore/crabcore/electronicore bands that have disappeared into the abyss. Electric Callboy however have leaned heavily on concept to really stand out.
Each song so far has an individual personality, so much so that the music videos are an integral part of the experience. We Got The Moves has the goofy yellow suits, bowl haircuts and head bob. Pump It takes us back to the glory days of spandex clad workout videos and when mullets were socially acceptable.
Now we have the recently released Spaceman – no prize here for guessing the theme, featuring FiNCH (the German rapper, not the 2000s emo band). Dance intro? check. Chuggy verse? check. Soaring chorus? check. Bouncy breakdown? all present and accounted for. Another £10m+ YouTube views likely only days away. We now just need a ridiculous squeal filled WBTBWB remix again to complete the circle….
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. And Electric Callboy certainly won’t be changing things up anytime soon whilst their popularity is skyrocketing. They look like they’re having a blast doing so, and fans worldwide are tuning in for the next dose of electronicore mayhem, so why would they? I for one and loving the ride.
