Long time symphonic metal veterans Delain have undergone a rather large change recently. Losing all members apart from one certainly qualifies as a major shift. Founder Martyn Westerholt has recruited new and former members to release new single under the new regime The Quest and the Curse. Replacing so many band members, including popular longtime vocalist Charlotte Wessels presents a boom or bust moment for Delain.
Rejoining Delain are original guitarist Ronald Landa and original drummer Sander Zoer. Entering the fray for the first time are bassist Ludovico Cioffi, and the pièce de résistance, new lead vocalist Diana Leah. For this new version of Delain to succeed, they had to find a new vocalist to capture the heart of listeners. A top tier leading female vocalist in a symphonic metal band is like nothing else in music. And Diana absolutely nails it on first single The Quest and the Curse.
Even after changing 80% of the band, this very much feels like evolution rather than revolution. Which is a good thing. The chunky, heavy soundtrack feel is still present. Diana‘s haunting, soaring pop vocals keeping the mood serene, sombre and engaging. It was certainly a shame to see Charlotte and the rest of the band leave, but Delain is in safe hands.
As Martijn Westerholt states, very simply:
“The future of DELAIN looks bright!”
DELAIN is:
Martijn Westerholt – keyboards
Diana Leah – vocals
Ronald Landa – guitars and backing vocals
Ludovico Cioffi – bass and backing vocals
Sander Zoer – drums
